Getting to know the people

Today I walked around Waikiki Beach. Once again I witnessed the tenderness that Hawaiians have towards the family unit. I was especially taken by the intergenerational respect between children and their elders- grandparents. At one point I saw a deeply Hawaiian-tanned grandmother sitting in an aluminum lawn chair showing her grandson how to thread a fishing hook with a line. The kid, shirtless and equally as tanned but a lot less wrinkled, was standing next to her in listening mode. He watched her delicate and strong hands. It was a brief moment in my consciousness, but one that beautifully sums up the role that elders play in Hawaiian culture by paying knowledge forward- and the reliance on oral tradition to the young. This concept goes well beyond the family unit into the realm of civics, as well.
